Spring is the time when everyone starts thinking about cleaning up the outside of thier homes. The roof is often a large percentage of what is visible. Cedar shake roofs can be gently cleaned of tree debris and preserved with a proper treatment. This will enhance the appearance and also prolong the life of the roof. When choosing a treatment for the roof there are a couple things that you need to keep in mind. The first is that the treatment must keep fungi and moss from growning. In our wet climate, moss and fungi wants to grow on just about everything. Moss and fungi build up on your cedar shake roof will reduce the serviceable life by years. A dark color on the roof is a coating of funi and algae. The second thing to look for is the treatments wood presurvative qualaties. The two best options for the treatment are copper based treatment and a sodium silica based treatment. Proper maintenance every 3-4 years will prolong the life of your roof by up to 15 years.
